Bishop Lynch has a diverse culture which includes 58 percent Caucasian, 19 percent Hispanic, six percent African-American, four percent Asian and one percent Pacific Islander. Because we celebrate and embrace our different cultures, this year’s Multicultural Week begins today – Monday, April 18 – and ends Friday, April 22. Activities include Karate and African drum lessons during lunch and an assembly on Friday celebrating the many cultures of the world. This year’s focus is on uniting the different cultures, so each day will celebrate many cultures instead of dedicating a separate day to each culture as in years past. Students will have food options from a variety of countries during lunches throughout the week.
“The goal of Multicultural Week is to introduce students to different cultures that they would normally not see on a daily basis,” explained Multicultural Club President Audrey Paetzel. “We also celebrate the diversity that we already have at BL.”
“We need to make an effort to highlight our diversity on campus,” said Multicultural Club Moderator Ms. Maria Rodriguez. “We have more than 40 different groups represented within our student body and faculty, so learning about and embracing the different cultures around the world will be a huge asset to our community.”
Diversity is an extremely important part of the BL community and is recognized by students and faculty this week.
Senior Maaron Lauder explained why diversity is valuable to her: “I think diversity is important to our community because it defines a big part of who we are and differentiates each person.”
“I believe this week is important because it is a way to bring the whole school together despite our differences,” said senior Anthony Onyedinma. “It also shows the different perspectives our students have depending on what culture they are from.”
“The world would be a very boring place without diversity,” explained Ms. Rodriguez. “This is why it is very important to recognize and embrace each other’s cultures.”
