Today marks the end of the third quarter, which means it is time to begin fourth quarter service hours. However, many students have trouble finding ideas for service in their area. Luckily, Dallas is a large city with many opportunities for BL students to serve those in need.
“The places that work to feed the hungry and provide for the needy give our students an opportunity to be paired with the people who need the services that they can provide,” explained theology teacher Mr. Timothy Hester. “And that should be our main goal in doing service.”
The Stewpot, which is located at First Presbyterian Church in Dallas, provides a safe haven for homeless individuals. Students volunteering here can make a difference in the Dallas area by providing meals for these individuals while getting face-to-face service.
At Jubilee Park Community Center, students can work with children in the after-school program. This program runs Monday-Friday during the school year, so there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer.
Reading Partners, which is an organization that works to help students who are behind in their grade’s reading skills, offers tutoring sessions Monday-Friday at many schools including Truett Elementary. Students may receive face-to-face service while making a difference in a child’s education.
“As Christians, it is very important to help people in order to make our world a better place,” said senior Megan Hertel.
“By serving the Dallas community, not only are we helping other people, but we also gain a better perspective on what we have in our own lives,” said senior Claire Sooter.
